José Morales (aka Shells Montana)

Some people write in journals. I photograph what I don’t want to forget.

After college, I traveled extensively through Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, usually with a Canon AE-1 and a 50mm lens slung over my shoulder. I even got to photograph the classic car races at Laguna Seca back in the ’90s. That engine-deep rumble of vintage machines still lives in my work.

For a stretch, I worked as a photojournalist in Latin America—learning what it means to be an observer in places where you don’t always belong. I’ve hiked trails across the U.S. and Europe, camera in hand, chasing light, solitude, and scale. Now I’m exploring street photography and visual storytelling—most of it in monochrome, where the distractions fall away and the emotion remains.

I’m also a Navy veteran, marathon runner, frustrated guitarist, and dad. I like a good espresso, a bad pun, and catching the moment just before it disappears.

As for the name? Shells Montana was my stage name in a cover band when I didn’t want my boss knowing how I was spending weekends. It stuck.
