José Morales (aka Shells Montana)
That’s me running. I do a lot of that actually. Some call it chasing unicorns.
I caught the photography bug quite young. There was, and thankfully remains, something magical for me about seeing the world thru a viewfinder, composing the scene and creating a physical impression of the emotion. After college I traveled extensively throughout Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. My Canon AE1 and a 50mm lens were always with me. I was lucky enough to photograph the classic sports car races at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California back in the 1990s. Classic cars still hold a special place for me, as you can tell from images posted here.
I worked as a photojournalist in Latin America for a while. You learn a lot about yourself, people and the world making photographs in unfriendly places as a non-tourist. I also spent several years hiking and photographing trails across the U.S. and Europe. The call to adventure and capturing the scale and beauty of the outdoors are still important to me. You can see some of those pictures here. More recently, I’m experimenting with street photography and visual story telling. Most of my work is monochrome. Not all of it though.
So, why “Shells Montana”? It was the stage name I used as a guitarist in a cover band when I didn’t want my boss knowing how I was spending my weekends. It stuck.
